cat question – how long can you leave a cat unattended?

I’ve heard various things about this. One person told me you can leave a cat a week if you leave enough food and water and other people say that’s too long – so what’s safe?
I haven’t done this but I thought about going out of town for a few days and I need to know how long I can be gone without having to board the cat.
we’ve left ours for a week before, and just had someone come over and change the water, clean all the boxes, and check on them once during the week.

My boyfriend and I have left our cats alone for 3 days and they were fine. They even still had a little food and water left when we got home. I firmly believe that you can leave cats alone up to a week provided they have enough food. However if you’re not sure if you’re going to be away longer. I’d just break down and board it. Or have a friend come check in on it.
